“Always on”, “loosely coupled architecture”, “Speed” etc. are of course crucial, but not always easy to realize in practice. We are looking for a seasoned leader to join us to build a great software organization.
Are you excited about the opportunity to build your own team and, in addition to full responsibility for development and ops, also have full responsibility for team building and culture? Then this is the place for you!

Join Essent as a Software Engineering Manager at Den Bosch.

Software Engineering Manager

With around 370 colleagues, our IT department is large enough to experience the benefits of a mature company and at the same time small enough to respond dynamically. We are constantly on the move and have unbridled ambition. With approximately 280 DevOps engineers in 50 teams, we have set up the teams in such a way that each team has a clear scope and each engineer can fully have his or her own input and impact. As a software engineering manager, you are HR responsible for the employees in your department, and you bear ultimate responsibility for Ops, Software development, way of working and budget. So no classic matrix, but full responsibility in your hand.  In addition to software engineers and scrum masters, a department also consists of architects and product owners and is led by three amigos: a product manager, system engineer and you!

Energy moves you

In this position you are part of the IT Delivery department. As a department, we have initiated and gone through a large number of changes in recent years. This is how we went from 100% separate to fully DevOps working. We are also replacing our low-code integration layer and backend with (in-house) software and we are trying to use DDD as a framework to become very loosely coupled and to give a high degree of autonomy to teams. In your position as a software engineering manager you aim for:

  • Further increasing the quality of what we do and make
  • Fulfilling an important role in staffing the teams
  • Boosting the personal development of engineers and scrum masters
  • Lead the planning and coordination thereof. You fulfill a spider in the web role. Together with your Amigos, you are working on realizing the vision and concretizing the strategy
  • Manage your budget
  • Managing dependencies between the different ARTs.
  • Ensure that operational matters in your teams run smoothly, such as impediments, structural improvements in processes or services you provide
  • Cultivating a culture of continuous improvement

Freek Lijten, Head of software engineering: 'In this position you will lead a number of DevOps teams. The team consists of 40 to 50 colleagues who work in the positions of DevOps engineer and scrum master. Together we aim to build a modern software organization. With your amigo’s, the product manager and system engineer, you deliver maximum value while monitoring the balance between quality, delivery and improvement.'
