Event Driven Architecture

At Essent, we have a mix of custom-built and pre-made systems, making our setup quite diverse and sometimes complex. To efficiently navigate this complexity and ensure scalability, we've strategically organized our operations into functional domains. Within these domains, we harness the power of cloud-native technologies and an event-driven architecture to construct systems that are not only loosely coupled for flexibility, but also capable of scaling seamlessly as needed. Our dedicated Data Engineers and Data Scientists employ a suite of technologies—Airflow, PySpark, Python, Snowflake, Databricks, among others—to manage this abundant data. They expertly transform raw data into actionable insights, further enabling us to cater to our customers' needs more effectively.

You build it, you run it

Introducing new features is generally a straightforward task. However, the true challenge arises in rapidly delivering these capabilities to our customers without compromising quality or causing significant interruptions. To meet this goal, we have structured our teams around specific domains. Each of these teams is made up of dedicated DevOps engineers, who are responsible for overseeing the entire development lifecycle, from the initial development all the way through to deployment and ongoing production support.

Tech Radar

Operating at our scale, with a multitude of teams overseeing a vast technical landscape, we understand the importance of offering guidance. Taking the lead

The growing number of households with solar panels and electric cars has made our customers’ energy usage more volatile. Moreover, the ‘energy landscape’ is changing rapidly, triggering the need for new services and solutions. The rate of change will probably increase even further. While stability, security and robustness remain as important as ever, flexibility, scalability and changeability are becoming increasingly important. This means Essent IT will have to improve itself drastically and take on a different role than before. Digital services play a critical role in Essent’s strategy and Essent IT must take the lead in this digital transformation.

Integrating energy solutions

Essent IT will integrate all our data, applications, services and products in a seamless customer experience. Integration will become a key capability of Essent IT. Making the difference for our customers by delivering an personalized integrated set of solutions based on customer data. Essent will become a ‘one stop energy shop’ for our customers, seamlessly connecting all their energy assets and providing all our products and services through centralized customer touch points, regardless of brands, business units or applications. In order to do this we need to collect data from our customers and create an all-round customer view.

Become a Software Engineer at Essent

With smart products, we are helping the Netherlands as a whole to make the energy transition one step at a time. At the same time, with around 250 colleagues, Essent IT is large enough to experience the benefits of a mature business, yet small enough to respond dynamically. With around 200 DevOps engineers in 27 teams, as a team you really have something at your disposal that has end-to-end impact. For example: the apps, the Essent.nl website, or the meter reading AWS app etc. We never sit still: the energy sector and energy transition are a very dynamic world in which we are constantly on the move, and you are largely responsible for determining and making your own journey within this.
